Oak Bark Peeling

In early summer each year, swill basket makers Owen Jones and Lorna Singleton head into the woods of south Cumbria to peel oak bark. The trees are felled in June when the sap is rising in the trees making the bark easier to peel. The bark itself is sent to J&JF Baker & Co, the last remaining oak bark tannery in the UK and the peeled oak trunks and branch wood will be used for posts, rails and decorative items.
